How to Prepare for SSC CPO
CPO preparation runs on two tracks at once: the written papers and the physical standards. Skipping either costs the attempt.
Preparing for SSC CPO means running two tracks at once: study for two written papers, and physical training for the PET that sits between them. Candidates who treat fitness as a post-result problem lose attempts they had already earned on paper. The plan below splits the work so neither track starves.
The score maths first, because it shapes everything: Paper I carries 200 marks across four subjects, and Paper II carries another 200 marks in English alone. English is half your written total.

The Four-Part CPO Plan
- 1
Train physically from day one
The PET comes before Paper II, and its standards are real: for men, 100 m in 16 seconds, 1.6 km in 6.5 minutes, a 3.65 m long jump. Run three or more days a week from the start of preparation. Fitness built over months holds; fitness crammed after the Paper I result usually does not.
- 2
Make Paper II English your biggest study block
Paper II is 200 marks of English only, and reading comprehension takes the largest share of it. Work grammar rules, para jumbles and vocabulary daily, and read editorial-length passages against the clock. This block pays into Paper I's English section too.
- 3
Aim for 160+ out of 200 in Paper I
Reasoning and English together should contribute 80 to 90 marks; they are the most learnable sections. Quant needs consistent daily practice rather than bursts. For General Awareness, weight recent current affairs, roughly the last six months, plus Indian polity and history.
- 4
Decide your force preference early
Delhi Police SI stays in Delhi; CAPF postings are pan-India with field duty. Knowing which life you want changes nothing about the syllabus, but it settles motivation and stops a last-minute preference filed on folklore.
A Week That Covers Both Tracks
A working structure: one daily English block, one daily quant block, alternating reasoning and general awareness, and three running sessions a week. Timed practice belongs in the schedule from the first month, not the last; the 2-hour, 200-question Paper I format rewards pacing that only comes from doing it repeatedly.
Track errors by chapter, not by mood. A written record of which quant chapters and which grammar rules keep costing marks turns revision from rereading into repair.
A plan built on a guess about your weak subject is a guess.
Before You Consider Yourself Exam-Ready
- checkYou can finish a full 200-question Paper I set inside 2 hours.
- checkYour English accuracy holds up on long reading-comprehension passages, not just one-line grammar items.
- checkYou have run timed 100 m and 1.6 km checks against the PET standards this month.
- checkYour last several practice papers score consistently near the 160 mark, not once by luck.
Practice Is the Plan's Feedback Loop
Every part of this plan assumes you know your current level, and the only way to know it is a scored, timed attempt. Start with one before allocating study hours; repeat one whenever the plan feels like it has stopped working.
Preparation FAQs
How should I split preparation between Paper I and Paper II?expand_more
Both papers carry 200 marks, but English appears in both: 50 questions in Paper I and all of Paper II. Giving English the largest single share of study time, alongside daily quant practice, matches how the marks are distributed.
When should I start physical training for CPO?expand_more
From the first day of preparation. The PET sits between the two written papers and eliminates candidates who cleared Paper I, so fitness cannot wait for the written result.
What Paper I score should I target?expand_more
A working target is 160 or more out of 200, with reasoning and English contributing 80 to 90 marks between them and steady quant practice covering the rest.
