SSC JE Eligibility: Who Can Apply
A diploma is enough. That single fact makes JE the widest central government door for engineers.
SSC JE eligibility asks for three things: a diploma or degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, an age between 18 and 32 years with category relaxations, and Indian citizenship. The headline fact is the first one: a 3-year diploma is sufficient. You do not need a B.E. or B.Tech to become a central government Junior Engineer.
That, plus an age window stretching to 32, makes JE one of the most open technical exams in central government recruitment.

SSC JE Eligibility at a Glance
| Criterion | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Education | Diploma or degree in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering |
| Age | 18-32 years |
| Age relaxation | As per government norms for reserved categories |
| Nationality | Citizen of India |
Diploma vs Degree: Same Exam, Same Post
Diploma holders and degree holders sit the same papers and compete for the same posts. There is no separate quota or separate paper by qualification. In practice this cuts both ways: the diploma route gets you eligible three or four years earlier, while degree holders often arrive with more recent exposure to the theory Paper 2 demands. Neither background wins by default; preparation does.
Note the discipline restriction, though. The exam recruits in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical streams. Engineers from other branches are not covered by the eligibility criteria in our data; check the current notification for post-wise qualification rules before assuming a related branch qualifies.
