SSC JE Exam Pattern: How Both Papers Are Set
An objective CBT, then a descriptive technical paper worth more marks. Two very different tests of the same subjects.
SSC JE has two papers. Paper 1 is a 2-hour objective computer-based test worth 200 marks, half of it technical. Paper 2 is a 2-hour conventional paper worth 300 marks, written descriptively in your engineering discipline. Same subjects, two different kinds of test: recall and speed first, depth and written working second.
This page covers the mechanics only. The topic lists per discipline live on the syllabus page.

Objective vs Conventional: Why Paper 2 Feels Harder
Paper 1 rewards broad, fast recall across the whole discipline: 100 technical questions in a shared 2-hour window leaves little time per question. Paper 2 flips the demand. Worth 300 marks, it asks for derivations, worked solutions and written explanation, the kind of answer you cannot bluff from a memorised formula sheet.
That contrast is why toppers commonly treat the two papers as separate preparations, giving Paper 2 its own dedicated months after clearing Paper 1. The subject knowledge overlaps; the skill of producing it under each format does not.
Marking Scheme: Check the Current Notification
SSC states the exact marking scheme, including any deduction for wrong answers in Paper 1, in each cycle's official notification on ssc.gov.in. Confirm it there before setting an attempt strategy.
