SSC Stenographer Eligibility and Exam Dates
Class 12 is enough, and the two grades carry different age bands. Here is who qualifies and when the cycle runs.
SSC Stenographer eligibility is short: a Class 12 pass from a recognised board, Indian citizenship, and an age between 18 and 27 years for Grade D or 18 and 30 for Grade C, with standard category relaxations. No graduation, no typing certificate, no prior stenography qualification is required to apply; the shorthand skill is tested later, not certified upfront.
Because the criteria are so short, this page also covers the second question the same reader always asks next: when the cycle runs.

The Grade C Age Band Is Wider on Purpose
Grade C, the senior post, accepts candidates up to 30 where Grade D closes at 27. For a candidate in their late twenties, that makes Grade C not just the better-paid target but the only available one. The two grades share the same CBT; the difference at application time is which posts you can be considered for, and later, which dictation speed you must clear.

What the Cycle Shape Means
The gap from application to CBT runs four to five months, a workable window for the written syllabus. The more important gap is the one you cannot see in the table: shorthand speed takes months to build, so the real preparation clock starts well before the notification if you do not already write shorthand. Applying first and starting shorthand after is the standard way candidates run out of time.
Confirm the Live Notification
Age cut-off dates, relaxation rules and the confirmed calendar are set in each cycle's official notification on ssc.gov.in. Vacancy counts also swing widely between years, so check the current cycle's revised figures there too.
