SSC Stenographer Salary: Grade C vs Grade D
Two grades, two pay levels, one exam. The 20 WPM gap between them is worth two pay levels.
SSC Stenographer pays by grade. Grade D is a Group C post at Pay Level 4, on a scale of ₹25,500 to ₹81,100 per month. Grade C is a Group B non-gazetted post at Pay Level 6, on ₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400. Same exam, same CBT; the grade you clear the skill test for decides which band you join.
The difference between the grades at the skill test is 20 words per minute of dictation speed. Few exams price a single trainable skill this directly.

What the Work Looks Like
Grade D stenographers handle stenography work across central government offices. Grade C stenographers work at Personal Secretary level in senior officers' offices, which is where the post's long-term shape changes: Grade C opens paths toward Personal Secretary roles and the administrative track around them.
Beyond pay, the job's reputation rests on what government stenography offers generally: job security, workable hours and steady progression. It is one of the quieter good deals in central government recruitment, largely because the shorthand requirement keeps the applicant pool small.
Whichever grade you target, the CBT is the same. See it first.
If You Can Reach 100 WPM, Aim for Grade C
The cut-off is higher and the dictation faster, but the reward is two pay levels and a better career track. 100 WPM is achievable with consistent daily practice for a candidate who can already manage 80. Deciding your target grade early lets your practice speed build toward the right number.
