How to Prepare for SSC Stenographer
Shorthand speed takes months to build and cannot be crammed. Everything else fits around that fact.
SSC Stenographer preparation is two different projects that must run in parallel: building shorthand speed for the skill test, and scoring in a 200-mark CBT where English carries half the marks. The shorthand project sets the timeline, because speed is built in months and cannot be crammed in weeks. Plan backwards from that.
Here is the three-part plan, then how a working week fits both projects.

The Three-Part Steno Plan
- 1
Start shorthand on day one
The skill test demands 80 WPM for Grade D or 100 WPM for Grade C, sustained through 10 minutes of dictation. Learn Pitman or another English shorthand system through a certified course, and practise at least an hour daily. Expect 4 to 6 months of consistent work to reach exam speed.
- 2
Make English your CBT lever
English is 100 of the CBT's 200 marks. Reading comprehension runs 20 to 25 questions on its own. Work comprehension, cloze tests, vocabulary and grammar daily; this is the section that clears cut-offs, and it also sharpens the language sense the transcription stage rewards.
- 3
Aim for Grade C if the speed is within reach
Grade C pays at Level 6 against Grade D's Level 4, and its 100 WPM requirement is achievable with consistent practice. Choosing the target early points your shorthand practice at the right speed from the start.
A Week That Feeds Both Stages
A workable structure: shorthand dictation practice daily, an English block daily, and reasoning plus general awareness on alternating days. Reasoning is the fastest CBT section to improve and general awareness rewards steady small doses of current affairs over cramming.
From the second or third month, add full timed CBT papers and full 10-minute dictations. Both stages punish candidates whose practice was always shorter than the real thing.
A plan built on a guess about your weak section is a guess.
Before You Consider Yourself Ready

- checkYou take complete 10-minute dictations at or above your target grade's speed.
- checkYou transcribe practice dictations on a computer, under the clock.
- checkYour error log for both stages shows a falling trend, not a flat one.
Preparation FAQs
How long does SSC Stenographer preparation take?expand_more
The shorthand skill sets the floor: about 4 to 6 months of daily practice to build 80 to 100 WPM for a new learner. CBT preparation fits comfortably inside that window if run in parallel.
Which section matters most in the SSC Stenographer CBT?expand_more
English, at 100 of the 200 marks. Reading comprehension, cloze tests, vocabulary and grammar are the highest-return study areas.
Can I prepare for the skill test without a coaching institute?expand_more
A certified shorthand course is the standard route because the notation needs structured teaching, but the speed itself is built through daily self-practice with dictation recordings, wherever you learned the system.
