How to Prepare for the IIBF International Trade Finance Exam
Three in four candidates failed last year. Here's a plan built around where they lose marks.
In 2024-25 only 25.14% of candidates passed this exam, according to IIBF's annual report. The bar is 60 out of 100, higher than many IIBF certificates, and the syllabus leans on case studies of the ICC rules rather than definitions.
Working in trade finance helps, but it is not the same as preparing. Day-to-day work teaches your bank's process; the exam tests the rule behind it, article by article, across products you may never handle. This plan is built around that gap.

A Six-Week Plan
Adjust the pace to your experience. A trade officer may compress weeks 1 and 2; a newcomer may need longer.
- 1
Week 1: Baseline and map
Take one timed practice set cold to find your weak blocks, then skim the official book end to end.
- 2
Week 2: Letters of credit
UCP 600 and ISBP with the rule text open (the syllabus names ISBP 745; ICC replaced it with ISBP 821 in July 2023): types of LC, examination of documents, discrepancies, presentation and the banks' obligations. Add eUCP.
- 3
Week 3: The other ICC rules and Incoterms
URC, URDG, URR and ISP98, then Incoterms 2020 and the changes from 2010. Work the case-study style questions for each.
- 4
Week 4: Export and import finance
Pre- and post-shipment credit, import finance, buyers' and suppliers' credit, forfaiting, factoring, supply chain finance, and the move from LIBOR to ARRs.
- 5
Week 5: Regulation, risk and compliance
Foreign Trade Policy, customs, exchange control, FEDAI, EXIM Bank and ECGC; then trade risks, maritime frauds, trade-based money laundering, sanctions, digitisation and logistics.
- 6
Week 6: Full mocks
Two or three full 120-question papers under a 2-hour timer, reviewing every wrong answer against the rule text.
Where Candidates Lose Marks
- check_circleMixing up the rulebooks: answering a collection question with UCP 600 logic, or a guarantee question with URC.
- check_circleKnowing a rule exists but not its number: presentation periods, days for examining documents, minimum insurance cover.
- check_circleIncoterms questions that ask who bears risk or cost at a specific point, not just what the abbreviation means.
- check_circleRegulatory questions on buyers' credit and exchange control that have moved since an old book or recalled paper was written.
- check_circleRunning out of time on case studies and leaving easy questions unanswered at the end.
Numbers Worth Knowing Cold
Settled rules from the ICC texts that turn up in options designed to look alike. Learn the article alongside the number.
- 21 calendar days
- UCP 600 Article 14(c): where the credit sets no period, an original transport document must be presented within 21 calendar days after shipment, and never after the credit expires.
- 5 banking days
- UCP 600 Article 14(b): the maximum time a nominated, confirming or issuing bank has after presentation to decide whether documents comply.
- 110%
- UCP 600 Article 28(f): unless the credit says otherwise, insurance cover must be at least 110% of the CIF or CIP value.
- 10% and 5%
- UCP 600 Article 30: "about" or "approximately" allows 10% either way on amount, quantity or unit price; otherwise a 5% quantity tolerance applies when goods aren't counted in units and the amount isn't exceeded.
- Irrevocable by default
- UCP 600 Article 3: a credit is irrevocable even if it doesn't say so.
- 11 Incoterms rules
- Incoterms 2020 has 11 rules. DPU replaced DAT, and CIP now requires the higher level of insurance cover (Institute Cargo Clauses (A)) unless the parties agree otherwise.
A plan built on a guess about your weak area is a guess.

There is no negative marking, so an unanswered question is a mark given away. Flag long case studies, finish the short questions, then come back.
Preparation FAQs
How long does it take to prepare for the IIBF trade finance exam?expand_more
IIBF gives no figure. Working trade finance staff often need four to six weeks of steady study; newcomers to trade should allow more, especially for the ICC rules.
Can I pass without working in trade finance?expand_more
Yes. Eligibility is only 12th pass, and the exam tests published rules and products. It takes more time on the ICC rules and documents if you haven't handled them at work.
Which topic should I start with?expand_more
Letters of credit under UCP 600 and ISBP (745 in the syllabus, 821 the current edition). Much of the rest of the syllabus, from documents to reimbursements and frauds, builds on it.
When should I start full mock tests?expand_more
Take one short timed set at the start as a baseline, then full papers in the last one to two weeks, once you have covered every block.
