JAIIB Exam Pattern
Four papers, 100 marks each, no negative marking. Here's exactly how JAIIB is scored and passed.
JAIIB isn't one exam; it's four separate papers, each scored and passed on its own. This page covers the mechanics of that scoring: how many questions per paper, how the 100 marks split, what actually counts as a pass, and how many attempts you get. It doesn't cover what's tested inside each paper. The syllabus page lists the units for IE&IFS, PPB, AFM and RBWM in detail.

How the 100 marks break down
Each paper's 100 marks come from three question-value tiers, not one:
- 50 questions at 0.5 marks each
- = 25 marks total: the largest share of questions, worth the least individually.
- 25 questions at 1 mark each
- = 25 marks total.
- 25 questions at 2 marks each
- = 50 marks total: a quarter of the questions carry half the paper's marks.
- Total
- 100 questions, 100 marks, in 120 minutes: the same structure across all four papers.
Is JAIIB MCQ based?
Yes, every JAIIB paper is 100% objective. All 100 questions per paper are multiple-choice, delivered online (computer-based), with no descriptive or subjective component. Negative marking does not apply, so an incorrect answer costs you nothing beyond the mark you'd have earned for it. The exam is offered in English or Hindi.
Is 50 marks pass in JAIIB? The dual pass rule
Short answer: yes, but that's only one of two ways to pass a paper, and mixing the two up is the most common confusion about JAIIB scoring. Route 1, standalone: score 50 out of 100 (50%) or more in a paper. This applies paper by paper: you can clear one paper this way in one attempt and another paper later, independently of it. Route 2, aggregate: score at least 45 out of 100 (45%) in every one of the four papers, and a combined 200 out of 400 (50%) across all four, but only if you sit all four papers in the same attempt window. A 45% score in a single paper does not clear it on its own; it only counts toward a pass if the same-sitting condition and the 200/400 aggregate are both met. So "50 to pass" is correct for the standalone route, but if you're relying on the aggregate route, 45 in a weaker paper can still clear it, provided the other three carry the aggregate. These are the currently reported thresholds. Confirm them against IIBF's own circular before you plan an attempt around the aggregate route specifically.

Attempts & carry-forward
- check_circleUp to 5 attempts within a 3-year block to clear all four papers: the block starts from your first attempt.
- check_circlePapers you've already passed carry forward within that block; you don't retake a paper you've cleared.
- check_circleOnly the papers you haven't passed need to be attempted again in a later cycle.
- check_circleIf you don't clear all four papers within the 5-attempt / 3-year window, credit for any cleared papers lapses and you'd need to re-enrol and start the block again.
How the CBT exam day works
The exact screens depend on IIBF's testing vendor for a given cycle, and this isn't an official IIBF walkthrough; it's the generic shape reported by candidates who've sat the exam:
- 1
Report and verify identity
Arrive by your allotted reporting time, and verify your identity against your call letter and photo ID before you're allowed into the test area.
- 2
Read the on-screen instructions
A brief instructions screen precedes the paper, covering navigation, marking and the timer, before questions begin.
- 3
Attempt the paper within the timer
120 minutes on the clock for 100 questions, visible on screen throughout. You can typically move between questions and revisit answers before submitting.
- 4
Submit before time runs out
The system auto-submits when time expires, so treat the last few minutes as a checkpoint, not a buffer.
Before you sit the paper
- checkValid photo ID that matches your registration details exactly
- checkYour call letter / admit card for that specific paper
- checkConfirmation of your reporting time: plan to arrive before it, not at it
- checkClarity on which paper you're sitting that session, since attempts are booked and scored per paper
- checkIIBF's current instructions for that cycle: reporting times, permitted items and ID rules are set per cycle and can change
FAQs
Is JAIIB MCQ based?expand_more
Yes. All four papers are 100% objective multiple-choice questions, delivered online, with no descriptive component and no negative marking.
Is 50 marks pass in JAIIB?expand_more
Yes, for the standalone route: 50 out of 100 in that paper. There's a second route too: 45 out of 100 in every paper plus a 200-out-of-400 aggregate, but only if you sit all four papers in the same attempt. See the pass-rule section above for the full breakdown.
Is the JAIIB exam difficult?expand_more
That depends on how comfortable you already are with banking, accounting and retail-banking concepts. We don't have verified, independent difficulty data to cite either way. What is fixed is the format: objective questions, no negative marking, and cleared papers carrying forward across attempts, which lowers the cost of not finishing all four papers in one sitting.
Is JAIIB easy to crack?expand_more
We can't back an "easy" or "hard" claim with real numbers. No verified pass-rate data is publicly available. The mechanics that are fixed and worth planning around: 100 objective questions per paper, no negative marking, and up to 5 attempts in a 3-year block to clear all four papers.
Registration cycles
JAIIB registration runs in two windows a year, each feeding a separate exam cycle. The registration page covers the steps, the portal login window, and where to check this year's actual dates. This page only covers what happens once you're sitting the paper.
