JAIIB Syllabus: IE&IFS, PPB, AFM & RBWM (Revised Scheme)
All four JAIIB papers, unit by unit, on the current revised syllabus.
JAIIB, Junior Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking & Finance, is built around four compulsory papers: Indian Economy & Indian Financial System (IE&IFS), Principles & Practices of Banking (PPB), Accounting & Financial Management for Bankers (AFM), and Retail Banking & Wealth Management (RBWM). This page sets out what each paper actually covers, on the current revised syllabus.
Each paper is a separate 100-question, 120-minute online exam with its own topic list: there's no shared syllabus across papers, and no elective to choose from (all four are compulsory). For the mark split, timing rules and how a pass is actually calculated, see the exam pattern page; this page carries none of that mark-math.
JAIIB is also not the same exam as CAIIB or IIBF's other certifications like DB&F. Each is a separate IIBF exam with its own syllabus and its own eligibility gate: CAIIB, in particular, requires a JAIIB pass before you can even register for it. This page covers JAIIB only.

Syllabus reflects IIBF's current scheme
The papers, topic areas and format figures below reflect IIBF's currently published revised scheme. IIBF revises syllabus content and topic weightage between cycles without much advance notice, so treat this as the current reference rather than a permanently fixed list. Confirm against IIBF directly if you're preparing close to a syllabus-revision announcement.

All four papers share the same format; only the subject and topic list change. Pass marks and attempt rules are covered in full on the exam pattern page; this table is deliberately just papers, marks and duration.

JAIIB IE&IFS Syllabus (Indian Economy & Indian Financial System)
IE&IFS pairs macro-level economic policy with the structure of India's financial system: the regulatory and market vocabulary the other three papers assume you already have. It covers five core topic areas:
- check_circleIndian economy fundamentals & reforms
- check_circleFinancial system structure & markets
- check_circleRBI, commercial banks, NBFCs
- check_circleMoney market & capital market
- check_circleFinancial products & services
JAIIB PPB Syllabus (Principles & Practices of Banking)
PPB is the paper closest to day-to-day branch work: banker-customer relationship rules, account types, negotiable instruments and the payment systems staff handle in real operations. It covers six core topic areas:
- check_circleBanker-customer relationship
- check_circleTypes of accounts & operations
- check_circleNegotiable instruments
- check_circlePayment & collection systems
- check_circleBanking technology & digital banking
- check_circleKYC/AML basics & ethics

JAIIB AFM Syllabus (Accounting & Financial Management for Bankers)
AFM is the one paper of the four built around calculation rather than recall: journal entries, reconciliation and business mathematics rather than definitions and procedure. It covers five core topic areas:
- check_circleAccounting principles, journal, ledger, trial balance
- check_circleBank reconciliation & final accounts
- check_circleDepreciation & ratio analysis
- check_circleBusiness mathematics (interest, annuities, bonds)
- check_circleTaxation basics & computerised accounting
JAIIB RBWM Syllabus (Retail Banking & Wealth Management)
RBWM covers the retail lending, wealth management and distribution topics closest to what bank staff sell directly to individual customers. It covers five core topic areas:
- check_circleRetail products (deposits, loans, cards)
- check_circleHome, auto, personal & education loans
- check_circleWealth management & financial planning
- check_circleInsurance & mutual fund distribution
- check_circleEmerging trends in retail & digital banking
Terms worth knowing before you start
A handful of terms that come up inside the topic areas above, in plain language:
- NBFC
- Non-Banking Financial Company: a financial institution that offers loans and credit like a bank but doesn't hold a full banking licence. Part of IE&IFS's financial-system-structure topic area.
- Negotiable instrument
- A document such as a cheque, promissory note or bill of exchange whose ownership transfers by delivery or endorsement. The core of PPB's negotiable-instruments topic area.
- KYC / AML
- Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering: the identity-verification and transaction-monitoring rules banks apply before and during an account relationship. Covered under PPB.
- Ratio analysis
- Reading a bank's financial statements through liquidity, profitability and solvency ratios rather than the raw figures alone. Covered under AFM.
- ULIP
- Unit Linked Insurance Plan: an insurance product with an investment component bundled in. One of the products under RBWM's insurance & mutual fund distribution topic area.
Syllabus-to-prep checklist
One pass through each paper's topic list before you start solving questions:
- checkRead through IE&IFS's five topic areas and mark which ones are genuinely new to you.
- checkRead through PPB's six topic areas, the paper closest to daily branch operations.
- checkRead through AFM's five topic areas and flag which need calculation practice, not just reading.
- checkRead through RBWM's five topic areas, especially wherever they overlap with products you already sell.
Common questions
Is this the current JAIIB syllabus?expand_more
Yes, the papers and topic areas above reflect IIBF's currently published revised scheme. IIBF revises units and topic weightage between cycles, so use this as the current reference rather than a permanently fixed list, and check IIBF directly if you're preparing close to a syllabus-revision announcement.
How many papers does JAIIB have, and how many topic areas per paper?expand_more
Four compulsory papers: IE&IFS, PPB, AFM and RBWM. IE&IFS, AFM and RBWM each cover five core topic areas; PPB covers six. There's no elective, unlike CAIIB.
What's the difference between JAIIB and CAIIB?expand_more
JAIIB is IIBF's foundational certification, covering these four compulsory papers. CAIIB is the advanced certification you can only register for after passing JAIIB, with its own compulsory papers plus an elective. They're separate exams with separate syllabuses.
Where can I download the JAIIB syllabus PDF?expand_more
IIBF doesn't publish one, so we compiled it: the download on this page carries the same paper-wise topic areas you're reading here, drawn from IIBF's currently published scheme. It's free and it's ours, not an IIBF document. Because IIBF revises the scheme between cycles, this page stays current where a file in your downloads folder won't; check back here if you're preparing close to a revision announcement.
Is JAIIB difficult?expand_more
That depends more on your starting point per paper than on the syllabus itself. AFM's calculation-heavy topics trip up different candidates than IE&IFS's economics content does. The preparation page covers a realistic study approach in depth.
How do I pass JAIIB in my first attempt?expand_more
That's a strategy question, not a syllabus one: see the preparation page for paper order and a study plan, and the exam pattern page for exactly how each paper is marked and passed.
