POSP Exam Pattern: What the Test Looks Like
There is no single national paper. Your sponsor sets the test, and that changes how you should read every format claim.
The POSP exam is a short online qualifying test taken after the 15-hour IRDAI-mandated training, typically 50 questions in 60 minutes. It is administered by your sponsoring insurer or intermediary, not by a central exam body, and passing it awards the POSP certificate.
That sponsor-administered detail is the single most important thing to understand about the format, and the one most pages skip: there is no single national POSP paper. Your sponsor sets the test within IRDAI's framework, so treat every format figure, including ours, as the common shape rather than a guarantee.

Your Sponsor's Version Is the One That Counts
Question count, time limit and qualifying score can vary between sponsors, since each IRDAI-registered insurer or intermediary administers its own test under the Master Circular's framework. Confirm the specifics with your sponsor before exam day, and read any third-party format description, including this one, as typical rather than binding.

What the Questions Are Like
The exam tests the 15-hour training content and nothing beyond it. Because POSPs sell only pre-underwritten, standardised products, there is no underwriting depth to examine; the paper concentrates on recognising POS products correctly, following IRDAI conduct rules, and knowing the boundary of what a POSP may sell.
That boundary is where marks are actually lost. Scope-of-work questions, what a POSP can sell versus what needs a full IC-38 agent, and compliance questions on mis-selling, rebating and KYC/AML trip more candidates than any product-knowledge question does, usually because the training's compliance module felt like common sense and got skimmed.
Passing It Comfortably
- check_circleDo the training properly. The exam is drawn from it, and 15 hours is short enough to actually study rather than click through.
- check_circleGive the conduct-rules module a second pass: IRDAI's code of conduct, mis-selling and rebating prohibitions, and KYC/AML basics.
- check_circleLearn the product boundary cold. Standardised POS products only; anything customisable is IC-38 territory, and the exam checks that you know it.
- check_circleTake timed practice tests in the 50-question, 60-minute shape before booking, so the format holds no surprises.
FAQs
How many questions does the POSP exam have?expand_more
Typically 50 questions in 60 minutes, taken online. The exact count and time can vary because each IRDAI-registered sponsor administers its own qualifying exam under IRDAI's framework.
Is the POSP exam difficult?expand_more
It is among the easier insurance certifications. The exam tests only the 15-hour training content: insurance basics, standardised POS products, IRDAI rules and sales conduct. Candidates who study the compliance material rarely struggle.
What happens if I fail the POSP exam?expand_more
Re-attempts run through your sponsor, which administers the exam. Policies vary by sponsor, so check yours; in practice the exam is on-demand, so a re-attempt is usually a matter of revising and rebooking.
Is the POSP exam conducted by IRDAI directly?expand_more
No. IRDAI sets the framework through its Master Circular on Point of Sales Products and Persons, but the qualifying exam itself is conducted by the IRDAI-registered insurer or intermediary sponsoring you.
