How to Prepare for the IIBF DRA Exam
Training gets you eligible. It doesn't get you to 50. Here's a plan that does.
The DRA exam is one paper: 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, pass mark 50. You can only sit it after finishing 50 or 100 hours of training at an IIBF-accredited agency, so the best plan runs alongside that training instead of starting after it.
It is passable, but not automatic. In FY 2024-25 the pass rate was 48.77%, per IIBF's annual report.

Three Attempts, Nine Months
IIBF's rules give you three attempts within nine months of completing training. Miss that window or fail three times and you must redo the training before you can register for the exam again. Prepare for your first attempt as if it counts, because it does.
Where to Spend Your Time
The syllabus has four modules. Module A (basics of banking) and Module D (NBFCs) are familiar ground for most candidates. Modules B and C carry the material specific to recovery work: loan types, securities, NPAs, the SARFAESI Act, DRT, Lok Adalat, the IBC, the DRA code of conduct, the rights of the defaulter and the Fair Practices Code.
IIBF does not publish a per-module mark split, so do not skip any module. But if your time is short, Modules B and C are where the unfamiliar terms are.
A Study Plan That Runs With Your Training
PrepClever's suggested sequence, not an IIBF-prescribed order.
- 1
Attend every training session
IIBF's FAQ states full attendance is required. Training covers the same syllabus as the exam, so it is your first pass through the material.
- 2
Read the matching handbook module the same day
After each session, read the matching part of IIBF's Handbook on Debt Recovery. Note terms in your own words as you go.
- 3
Start timed practice before training ends
Do short timed sets on each module as you finish it, not all at the end. This turns reading into recall.
- 4
Drill the legal terms
SARFAESI, DRT, Lok Adalat, IBC, NPA classification and the defaulter's rights are easy to mix up. Give them extra repetition.
- 5
Sit a full 100-question timed mock
Do at least one complete 2-hour paper before exam day so the real exam is not your first time at the full length.
A plan built on a guess about your weak module is a guess.
Why the Pass Mark Shapes Your Strategy
There is no negative marking, so a blank scores the same as a wrong answer. Answer every question, and mark the hard ones to come back to if time allows.
100 questions in 120 minutes is about 72 seconds each. Practise at that pace so the clock is not a surprise.
Take the Exam in the Language You Trained In
IIBF offers the DRA exam in English, Hindi and 9 regional languages. If you trained in Hindi or a regional language, you can take it in bilingual mode with English. Choose the language you studied in, and make sure your agency enters it on your application; IIBF treats a blank medium as English.
Before Exam Day
The exam is held at a centre, not at home. These come from IIBF's DRA rules.
- checkCollect your admit letter from your training agency. IIBF says agencies hand them out one week before the exam date.
- checkCarry a printed copy of the admit letter and an original photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, voter ID, passport or employer ID). Without both you will not be allowed in.
- checkLeave your phone outside. Even a switched-off phone in the exam hall is treated as unfair means.
- checkA basic calculator is allowed (8 functions, 12 digits). A scientific calculator is not.
- checkReach before the reporting time on the admit letter. Late entry is not allowed, and you cannot leave in the first 60 minutes.
FAQs
How long does it take to prepare for the DRA exam?expand_more
Most of the preparation happens during the compulsory training, which IIBF says takes roughly 8 to 15 days for the 50-hour course and 17 to 30 days for the 100-hour course. Plan to finish your reading and timed practice inside that period or shortly after.
Is the DRA exam hard?expand_more
It is a basic-level exam, but not a formality. IIBF's annual report puts the FY 2024-25 pass rate at 48.77%. Treat it as an exam to prepare for, not a box to tick after training.
What happens if I fail the DRA exam?expand_more
You can re-register and try again, paying the fee each time. You get three attempts within nine months of completing training. After that, you must redo the training before registering again.
Which modules should I focus on?expand_more
All four can be tested and IIBF publishes no mark split. Modules B and C, covering recovery law, loan products and the DRA code of conduct, usually have the most unfamiliar material.
Can I use a calculator in the DRA exam?expand_more
Yes, a battery-operated calculator with up to 8 basic functions and 12 digits. Scientific calculators are not allowed.
Is there negative marking in the DRA exam?expand_more
No. Wrong answers lose no marks, so answer every question.
